Shortening a watch strap – Instructions for adjusting your watch strap
How can I have my bracelet made smaller?
A watch strap should fit perfectly. If your stainless steel or metal strap is too large, you can quickly and easily shorten it yourself using a strap shortener . This step-by-step guide shows you how to reduce the size of your watch strap – including information on push pins and screw-on straps .
Step-by-step: Shortening a bracelet
- Preparation: Place the watch on a soft, non-slip surface to avoid scratches.
- Plan the length: Determine how many links need to be removed. Remove the links as symmetrically as possible on both sides of the clasp.
-
Properly solving it – push vs. screw:
- Push-button bracelets: Small arrows are usually embossed on the inside. They indicate the direction in which the pen must be pushed out.
- Important: One-way pens. One end often has a double head – do not press from this side. Always press in the direction of the arrow .
- Screwed bracelets: Links are fixed with small screws. Carefully loosen these with a suitable watchmaker's screwdriver.
- Removing links: Remove the planned number of links, checking the fit periodically.
- Close & secure: Reinsert pins in the opposite direction of the arrows and press in flush; screw in screws cleanly and secure by hand.
Tips for a clean result
- Use only appropriate tools (bracelet shortener, driver, fine screwdrivers).
- For stubborn pens: gentle, straight pressure – do not tilt.
- After shortening, check the clasp function; wear the watch briefly and check the fit.
Overview of bracelet types
- Push-pin bracelets: Squeeze the pins out on one side only (note the direction of the arrow; do not press the double-headed side).
- Screwed bracelets: Links are fixed with screws – loosen and re-secure with a screwdriver.
